The Box
Christmas 1999 the family, as always, has gathered for the traditional gift exchange and 5 hour feast at Sal and Carol's house(Mom and Pop to Gregg and Chris). We are sitting in the den,Gregg and Chris are laughing so hard I thought they were going to fall off the couch or wet their pants. They insisted I open my gift first. It's not easy for an Aunt to buy her 30 year old nephews a gift, since they have everything and make a lot more money then I do-and it's even harder for 30 year old nephews to buy their Aunt something. However,we always managed to come up with something USELESS, UNIQUE AND MEMORABLE. This year was no exception. As always they had a story they had to tell before I opened my gift from Gregg-still laughing to beat the band-They began by saying the gift was not the best part but rather the wrapping of the gift was were the story began. It seems my gift was the last one to be wrapped on Christmas Eve. The scene as they described it was-Gregg, Chris and Jeff at Gregg's house late Christmas Eve wrapping gifts-already it's trouble-They realize they have no box to wrap my gift in-so they have to improvise-they look around and the only "box" they can find is one which just so happens to contain a case of beer. So they make the supreme sacrifice for my gift and drink the entire case just so they can eventually have an empty "box". One can only imagine the scene of 3 "grown men" somewhat "happy" trying to wrap a gift in the wee hours of Christmas Eve in a Coors Light Beer Box. The gift will always be special to me not so much for what it is ,a NY YANKEE sweatshirt, but for the memory it brings forth. One memory of many over the years-I'm proud and thankful to be able to say that all the memories are good ones. Aunt Phyllis |
